Eighth Air Force Heavy Bomber Mission No. 76: 323 aircraft sent to attack targets in Germany. 68 hit the Hamburg U-boat yards, 67 hit the Kiel U-boat base, 18 the airfield at Rerik West, 14 hit Heide and 51 attack targets of opportunity. Nineteen aircraft lost. The raid is the first USAAF contribution to the "Battle of Hamburg"

Six RAF Mosquitos carry out a nuisance raid of Hamburg (night of 25/26 July), triggering the main air raid alarm

Mussolini falls from power and is arrested. Marshal Badoglio forms a new Italian government

Pacific

Start of the 'Corps Offensive' on Munda, a much larger attack that ends in success in early August (Operation Toenails).
