History

The 2nd Reconnaissance Group (USAAF) was a home-based training unit that operated for two years from May 1942 until May 1944.

The group was formed in May 1942 and was assigned to the Second Air Force. It was used to train crews and entire units in photographic reconnaissance and mapping duties. This filled an important gap in the USAAF training scheme - the older 1st Photographic Group was split into four, with one squadron attached to each of the Continental Air Forces and spent most of its time on mapping duties, so had little time for training.

On occasion the group's own personnel were used to help form a new unit, but the group retained all but one of its squadrons until 1944. The group was disbanded on 1 May 1944.
